JCRC 4th Annual MLK Day of Service

Thank you for volunteering!

Over 300 volunteers joined us for our fourth annual MLK Day of Service! Volunteers participated in 10 projects all over Greater Boston.

Families sorted through donations of clothing and toys in the Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory— enough to help 210 low-income and homeless children (L). Volunteers and Hebrew SeniorLife residents wrote 24 letters to Congress in an effort to keep Temporary Protected Status (a designation for people who could not return safely to their countries) alive.

More than 120 Metrowest teen and adult volunteers helped spread warmth by making 60 lasagnas & 70 loaves of banana bread to be distributed to local soup kitchens and shelters with the Jewish Teen Initiative.

Over 50 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to paint walls and provide necessary safety improvements and repairs to the Waltham Haitian Church of the Nazarene, and to homes in Mattapan and Dorchester with Rebuilding Together Boston.

Join Hebrew SeniorLife for an Action to Protect Immigrants
Location: 100 Centre Street, Brookline
Time: 2:00pm-4:00pm
Open to adults
Right now, immigrants in our country are under attack from all angles. One thing that we can do together is fight to protect people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a designation for people who could not return safely to their countries due to natural disasters and armed conflicts. TPS is set to expire in the coming year for people from many countries, including Haiti, El Salvador and Sudan. Many TPS holders have been here for decades and have built their families here. Volunteers and residents will come together to write letters to our congress people to fight to keep TPS alive.
St. Francis Soup Kitchen
Location: 39 Boylston Street, Copley Square Boston
Shift one: 9:00am-11:00am – Meal Prep  – FULL!
Shift two: 11:00am-1:30pm – Serving Lunch – FULL!
Open to adults
The first shift will be helping to prepare the lunchtime meal and get the soup kitchen ready for lunch service. The second shift will be serving the meal to clients. St. Francis is a day shelter in Back Bay that serves between 300-350 people daily. 2Life’s Golda Meir House

Projects for Teens & Adults

Revitalize the Waltham Haitian Church of the Nazarene!
Open to ages 12-15 with a chaperone and all volunteers 16 and older We will provide an interior revitalization at the Waltham Haitian Church of the Nazarene. Volunteers will paint and do much-needed repairs to several areas of the church, which is preparing for their Annual Celebration on January 27. Volunteers may sign up for both shifts. No prior home repair experience or skills necessary (though skilled volunteers are certainly welcome!)
Come join us and help in the revitalization of this community’s sacred space!
The work will take place in two shifts:
Morning shift: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Afternoon Shift: 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM Rebuilding Together Boston: Help homeowners remain living safely at home! – FULL!
Open to ages 12-15 with a chaperone and all volunteers 16 and older Once again, the JCRC and Rebuilding Together Boston (RTB) will team up to provide necessary safety improvements and repairs to homes of RTB clients. By harnessing the energy and skills of volunteers, RTB is able to provide low or no cost improvements to homes of their clients; elderly, disabled and low income homeowners who wish to continue to live safely in their homes. Sites are located in the Roxbury/Dorchester/Mattapan neighborhoods with specific locations TBD. No prior home repair experience or skills necessary (though skilled volunteers are certainly welcome!)
Come join us to help homeowners continue to live safely and comfortably at home!

For MetroWest Teens and Pre-Teens

Prepare food for meals programs and food pantries in the Metrowest
Location: Temple Beth Am, 300 Pleasant Street, Framingham
Time: 12:00pm-3:00pm
This project is in collaboration with the Jewish Teen Initiative of Boston and supported by CJP’s Metrowest Planning Committee.
Get your cooking mojo up and help stock the food supplies of Metrowest food pantries and shelters by making dozens of lasagnas and breads for those in need. Any pre/teen from the Metrowest area is welcome: no previous cooking experience or synagogue affiliation are required.
Participants will also have the opportunity to paint “Stars of Hope” – brightly painted wooden stars with messages of hope and love – help communities heal through the power of art and unity.

Projects for Families with Young Children

Celebrate Tu B’shevat at Temple Israel, Sharon
Date: Sunday, January 20th
Location: Temple Israel 125 Pond Street, Sharon
Time: 10:00am-11:30am
Open to families with young children
Learn about Tu B’Shevat and the importance of taking care of the earth. There will story time and kids will be making potted plants to donate to a local senior community. Families are also encouraged to bring new or gently used books to donate to the Kennedy Elementary School in Brockton. St.Stephens Youth Programs at the Blackstone Elementary School – FULL!
Location: Blackstone Elementary School, 380 Shawmut Avenue, South End Boston
Time: 9am-12:30pm
Open to all ages including families, teens, and young adults
Volunteers will be working on beautification and revitalization projects throughout the elementary school. After volunteering, there will be a lunch and discussion about MLK Day and why it has become a day of volunteering. JVS Chelsea Outreach Day!
Location: Chelsea CONNECT – 4 Gerrish Ave, Chelsea, MA
Time: 10am-2pm
Join JVS and other community partners to connect community members with free community resources! You will join a team of enthusiastic volunteers who are committed to helping people improve their lives through skill building and employment services. Do you like spreading the word through one-on-one conversations? We’ve got a role for you! Would you rather distribute hundreds of flyers without having to talk to anyone? Don’t worry, we’ve got a role for you too!If you have the time, we will find the right role for you to help this city-wide effort! Volunteers of all ages welcome; some volunteer assignments are kid-friendly!
